Family Patio and BBQ area - Mayo

This sunken-seating area was designed to extend a patio space for a family garden in County Mayo. It creates a cosy nook with a stove and a BBQ area for outdoor dining. Work is still ongoing: there is still paving and painting to be done, worktops to be fitted and seating to be added in Spring 2024. This webpage will be updated when the project is complete.

PLANTING PALETTE

There is a bold and impactful split-complementary scheme of purple, orange and green used in the planting, which creates a beautiful, balanced warm-toned palette. The rusty tones of the Geum ‘mai tai’, Crocosmia ‘Emily McKenzie’, Tulip ‘Apricot Foxx’ and bronze fennel echo the fiery flames of the built-in stove and the sizzling outdoor kitchen. Culinary herbs are used for some of the evergreen structure, with upright and trailing rosemary, thyme and fennel adding beauty and structure as well as practical cooking use in the raised beds next to the kitchen area. This area is quite exposed, both in terms of sunshine and wind, and as such, ornamental grasses make up the backbone of the scheme. Calamagrostis ‘Karl Foerster’, Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldtau’, Molinia caerulea ‘Edith Dudszus” provide texture and movement to the scheme and tie the bold colours together. Carex ‘Frosted curls’ adds more evergreen structure, and an abundance of colour is provided by long flowering perennials such as Verbena bonariensis and Salvia ‘Amistad’.
