Design Process

  • Our Ethos

Garden design is a collaborative process, throughout which, we seek input and feedback from our clients to ensure the design is not only practical and beautiful, but reflects their tastes and needs. Our goal is to design gardens which are a joy to be in. We are first and foremost inspired by our client's vision and style, taking note of any preferences for colours, form and function. But we’re also driven by sustainability, and it underpins many of the choices we make. If you have an questions about our process, please get in touch.

  • Consultation

The design process starts with a site visit and initial consultation. We’ll discuss your garden goals, preferences and priorities. We may also assess what your soil is like, the garden’s aspect, where there’s shade, and any existing features. After this, we’ll send you a written brief, which provides a comprehensive summary of our consultation along with an outline of our design fees and the proposed next steps.

  • Site Survey

Once you’ve reviewed and accepted the proposal, the next step is to fully survey the site. This allows us to take comprehensive measurements of your garden, so we can identify the space available as well as any key features such as existing trees and shrubs, utilities, level changes, and more. For smaller gardens this may be done by hand, in larger projects we may request that a topographical survey is completed. From this we’ll sketch an initial base plan that we will use for your redesign.

  • Concept Plan

Next, we’ll create hand-drawn or computer generated concept designs to illustrate the new layout and key components of your new garden. We’ll also put together moodboards to support the concept. At this stage, the focus is very much on the layout, rather than specific details. This may need to be revised and we will come to you for feedback to get this stage just right.

  • Developed Design

After the concept design and layout is agreed, we will develop the chosen concept into a masterplan. This will show the garden layout, the location and size of any hard landscaping, lighting locations, general planting structure and dimensions. We will also curate a series of annotated plans to highlight material palettes, lighting schemes, focal points and features, as well as a general planting palette. Exact plant lists with names, sizes and quantities will be confirmed in the next stage. 3D imagery is developed at this stage to help communicate the vision.

  • Planting Plan

The planting plan shows the locations of all the proposed plants, along with their names, sizes and quantities used. We will provide a moodboard of all plants so you can see what each of the plants looks like. Additionally, we’ll curate a calendar of seasonal interest and maintenance required, so you know when each of the plants will be in flower (or in leaf) and when they will require a tidy up, trim, feed or prune. We can provide a full design, source, supply and fit service on planting, from our trusted suppliers if required.

This design process is suitable for anyone with a blank space in a brand new garden; an existing garden that doesn’t fit your needs; an established garden that's not to your taste; or an overgrown garden that needs to be tamed. Our full garden design packages are priced at consultation depending on the size and complexity of the project.

Other Services

For those that don’t require a full garden design package, but may want some advice and inspiration to help them with their own garden, or specific guidance on reviving a border (or more), we offer the following:

Advice

In this one-to-one online session, you can pick our brains on anything that’s troubling you in your garden… whether it’s tricky layouts, low-maintenance plant selection, garden furniture recommendations, material choices, water features and more. Please note this is not a design package and will therefore not include any garden drawings, plans or lists.

Planting Package

We’re passionate about plants. If you want to refresh an existing border or create a cohesive planting design, we can select and source plants that complement your desired aesthetic and thrive in the conditions you have. Our planting package includes an initial consultation and a full planting plan (see above) but does not include full garden plans or revision to garden layouts. Our team can also source and supply your plants and personally lay them out to ensure they’re planted as set out in the design.
